Choosing the best humidifier for your baby

As an expecting mother, I was just as selective as other mothers on picking out the best baby items with extreme care.  Asking for recommendations on changing tables that are safe and can also last well through elementary years, checking out crib mattresses that will promote my baby’s sleep and benefit early childhood development. There is this one item that is so crucial for you to have before and after your little ones arrive – a good humidifier.

But, what is a good humidifier I should use for my baby’s nursery? After talking to many moms with little ones and speaking to a pediatrician friend, I learned some convincing information about how a humidifier can be beneficial to my baby’s health.

Cool Mist vs Warm Mist

There are two types of humidifiers to consider depending on your location. People from north tend to favor a warm mist while southerners prefer having a cool mist humidifier.

  • Warm Mist Humidifiers are good for the cold and dry weather because the warm mist can help kill germs and viruses. They can also help babies breathe easier by reducing mucus and dry respiratory passages. Check with your pediatrician to make sure it’s recommended for your particular home condition. Because warm mist can also potentially burn if your baby has sensitive skin.
  • Cool Mist Humidifiers are highly recommended by most pediatricians as they do not have a heating device installed. It releases pure cool mist to your space improving the air quality. Toddlers can even touch and play with the mist knowing it’s completely safe.

Both warm mist and cool mist humidifiers are made to deliver comfort and fresh air to your home. All humidifiers can also build up mold and bacteria in their tanks. So if you're picking a humidifier in your baby's room you must be sure to clean it regularly (we recommend every few days)! A solution of 2 tablespoons water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar is perfect for cleaning this easy humidifier, just make sure you give it a thorough rinse off.

Key Features of a Good Humidifier

For you to find the best humidifier for your little sweetheart, here are a few things you want to know before making the final decision.  Your goal is to reach an optimal level of comfort for your baby and your home.  It should be completely safe to use as well as good looking if you care about the design. A good quality humidifier is $50 and up that comes with good warranty.

  • A good humidifier must have the built-in Auto shut-off feature that gives you peace of mind. Being a new mommy, sleep deprived, juggling between nursing and numerous chaos, you do not want to keep something that might burn the top of your carefully picked baby dresser. That’s why millions of moms will go with the automatic shut-off humidifiers. When water runs out it turns itself off, saves electricity and takes the burden off your shoulder, adding more precious bonding time.

  • A good humidifier comes in a good size water tank. Over 2-Liter tank sized humidifiers are typically favored by most moms as they free you from having to get up in the middle of the night to refill the tank. These humidifiers can last a good 8-24 hours on a single tank and guarantee you a peaceful long night sleep.

  • A good humidifier is made whisper-quiet. Noise volume under ≤32dB is ideal for babies and light sleepers. The better quality humidifiers are installed with quieter fans. Cool mist ones are proved quieter than warm mist ones because there is no background bubbling and hissing noise from boiling the water inside the tank base.

  • A good humidifier must be easy to clean. Filtered water is recommended for an easy clean. Some brands come with bonus brushes that make cleaning hassle-free.

Best Humidifiers of 2018

After trying out some popular brands on the market, we settled with a new Tekjoy cool mist humidifier. We started with a pink and a blue color Crane brand humidifier before our baby got here (we kept it a surprise). We used the pink one for baby girl’s room and kept the blue one in our bedroom. They were a good size and worked great. But not long after a month, the pink one started growing yellow stuff on the surface of the tank and it’s so frustrating to clean. The blue one followed the pink one to the storage.

What about the top seller Pure Enrichment brand? Looks cute and feels very light. For the first night, at 3:00 in the morning it stopped working because it doesn’t have that big a tank to work overtime. Dang~

We kept looking, and searching… Until we found this new brand called Tekjoy. We had to be cautious to try it even though it’s got great customer reviews.  The result is: we love it, baby enjoys using it, and we highly recommend!
